​Let me tell you about a thinking model used during World War II that saved the lives of countless men.

THE WORLD WAR II INSIGHT THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

During World War II, military analysts were searching for better ways to armor their aircraft.

​​

They noticed many of the returning planes showed bullet hole patterns concentrated in the wings, tail, and fuselage areas.

​​​

The immediate (intuitive) idea was to reinforce these areas. Sounds logical, right?

​​

However, a U.S.-based statistician named Abraham Wald made an important observation that would change everything.

​​

The planes they were inspecting were only the planes that made it back safely to base.

​​

The planes that DID NOT return were the ones hit in other vital areas, like the engine, pilot cockpit, and flight control systems.

​​

By focusing only on the survivors, they were missing the most crucial information about what was actually causing planes to go down.

​​

Wald's insight was to reinforce the areas with NO bullet holes on the returning planes.

​​

Why? He realized the planes hit in those parts didn't survive. They didn't return and therefore weren't studied or counted.

This is called the INVERSION PRINCIPLE.

By flipping the problem on its head and looking at what wasn't there instead of what was, Wald saved the lives of countless pilots and flyboys during the war effort.
